GTA 6 is eligible for The Game Awards 2026 with one day to spare
GTA 6 launches November 19, one day before The Game Awards 2026 cutoff, so Rockstar's game can compete for Game of the Year at the December 10 show.
Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

GTA 6 will compete at The Game Awards 2026, and it qualifies with exactly one day to spare. The show's official FAQ says a game has to be commercially available on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. Rockstar's game launches on November 19. Industry watcher Shinobi602 spotted the cutoff in mid-October, and Eurogamer, Kotaku and GamesRadar+ all reported it on October 15.
The fan-voted Players' Voice category has a longer window. Games there must ship by November 30, according to Kotaku. The ceremony itself takes place on December 10, Eurogamer notes.
A tight fit, but no special treatment
A one-day margin looks almost too convenient. Before the cutoff was published, fans weren't sure GTA 6 would make it, because nominations usually come out around the same time as its release. Missing out would have pushed it into the 2027 show, where it would face a year's worth of newer games.
According to Eurogamer, Shinobi602 pointed out that the cutoff lands in roughly the same spot every year and only moves by a day or two. Kotaku sees it differently. It calls this year's cutoff much later than last year's and notes that nominations for the 2025 show were already public by November 17. The sources don't agree on how unusual the timing is, but none of them suggests the organisers bent the rules for Rockstar. GamesRadar+ also doubts the studio picked its release date with the awards in mind, though it calls qualifying a welcome bonus.
Being eligible is only half of it. The outlets that vote also need time to play a huge open-world game before they fill in their ballots. Kotaku, which doesn't vote, explains that outlets handle this differently, and many lean on the one or two staff members who reviewed or finished a game. Eurogamer says it is a member of the jury.
Leaker NateTheHate claims review codes could go out to media and creators before the end of October. Rockstar hasn't announced a review schedule, and as of October 31 we haven't seen anyone confirm that codes have gone out.
Can it beat Clair Obscur's record?
The record belongs to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It took nine awards from 13 nominations at the 2025 show, including Game of the Year. Baldur's Gate 3 held the record before that with six wins. Rockstar's last big release, Red Dead Redemption 2, won four in 2018: Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Score/Music, and Best Performance for Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan.
In a follow-up piece on October 20, GamesRadar+ listed the categories where GTA 6 could realistically get a nomination: Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, audio, visuals and performance, plus either Best Action or Best Action-Adventure. The indie categories are obviously out. Best Community Support depends on how Rockstar handles things after launch, and Players' Voice could come down to fan enthusiasm. The writer thinks tying Clair Obscur is possible but an uphill climb.
The competition
Kotaku calls 2026 one of the weaker Game of the Year fields in recent memory. There's no runaway favourite like Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3 had, although Kotaku says Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant were both reviewed very well. GamesRadar+ adds Saros and Slay the Spire 2 as likely nominees and names the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as the rival to watch. Kotaku also reports that prediction markets gave GTA 6 a 68 percent chance of winning Game of the Year before anyone had played it.
What comes next
For players, this means the debate over GTA 6's quality and its awards run will happen at the same time as launch, not a year later. Nominations for the 2026 show haven't been announced yet. The game's reception after November 19 will decide whether it lives up to the expectations Rockstar's own developers have talked about.
