GTA 6 Lucia and Jason: every protagonist rumour versus the reveal

How GTA 6's Lucia and Jason went from a 2021 rumour and the 2022 leak to Rockstar's official reveal, and which protagonist claims proved true or wrong.

Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

GTA 6 has two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and Rockstar Games has built its marketing around both of them. On November 19, 2026, the game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and players will finally control the pair. That moment took five years to arrive, with a leaker's video, a Bloomberg scoop, a damaging hack and two trailers along the way.

2021: a leaker's video gets a Bloomberg nod

The first widely discussed claim came in summer 2021. Tom Henderson, known then for Battlefield and Call of Duty leaks, posted a YouTube video about GTA 6. He said the game would have a modern setting that includes Vice City, a map that changes over time, and several playable characters, among them a female protagonist who would play a hacker role. PC Gamer covered it on July 5, 2021.

On its own, this was a rumour. Its credibility rose when Bloomberg's Jason Schreier tweeted on July 4, 2021 that "Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I've heard." Rockstar said nothing about any of it.

2022: Bloomberg's scoop, then the hack

On July 27, 2022, Bloomberg went further. Citing current and former Rockstar developers, Schreier reported that GTA 6 would star the series' first female Latina protagonist, one half of a duo inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, in a fictional version of Miami. GamesRadar+ summarised the report, which tied the decision to cultural changes at Rockstar after criticism of crunch on Red Dead Redemption 2.

In September 2022 came the hack. About an hour of early development footage, split into roughly 90 clips, spread online. Rockstar confirmed the footage was genuine and blamed a "network intrusion," according to PC Gamer. The clips showed two playable characters named Lucia and Jason, including a diner robbery played as Lucia and a near-instant switch between the two. PC Gamer noted that Lucia might be Latina, as rumoured, but said it was hard to tell. We won't point anyone to that footage. Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut has since said the hack felt deeply invasive.

2023: Trailer 1 puts Lucia first

Rockstar's first official look arrived early, on Monday, December 4, 2023. NBC 6 South Florida described a story about a woman named Lucia and an unnamed partner in a Bonnie and Clyde-style story, making her the series' first female lead. According to the outlet, Guinness confirmed 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours. The trailer also teased a 2025 release. Our Trailer 1 explainer covers the record and the leak that forced the early release.

2025: Trailer 2 names both protagonists

The full reveal came on May 6, 2025. Alongside Trailer 2, Rockstar's press release described Jason and Lucia as a pair caught in a criminal conspiracy across the state of Leonida after "an easy score goes wrong." It said they are "forced to rely on each other more than ever." At that point the game was set for May 26, 2026. It was later delayed to November 19, 2026.

Rockstar's updated website gave the pair full names and backstories, Game Informer reported. Jason Duval is an army veteran who works for drug runners in the Keys but wants out. Lucia Caminos was trained as a fighter by her father, and fighting for her family landed her in jail. For the people behind the performances, see our voice cast rumour guide.

2026: how the duo was built

Bloomberg's making-of feature, published October 14, 2026, adds the backstory. We could not read the Bloomberg page directly, so these details come from summaries by GTA Intel and VGTimes. According to those summaries, the story outline for Jason and Lucia as a criminal couple robbing their way through a fictional Miami existed by the end of 2019. Letting the two spend time together in the open world reportedly took a lot of companion AI work. Our own reporting on the feature found that the dual-protagonist setup was part of the game's skeleton by 2019, and that Covid-19 slowed later work. Our piece on Project Americas covers the wider history.

Rockstar's pre-launch updates have kept the pair at the centre. Its October 8 radio announcement said players can listen to stations and podcasts through headphones and earbuds connected to Jason and Lucia's smartphones. In an Edge preview, a police dog pinned Jason after the pair crashed a motorcycle and ran. Rockstar also says police remember what the two are wearing.

Scorecard: right, wrong and still open

Turned out true

  • A playable female protagonist (Henderson in 2021, Bloomberg in 2022).
  • More than one playable character, as Henderson claimed.
  • The names Lucia and Jason, first seen in the 2022 leak.
  • A modern Vice City setting.
  • A duo story. Rockstar's synopsis has the two relying on each other, and Bloomberg's 2026 feature calls them a couple.

Not supported by anything Rockstar has shown

  • Lucia as a hacker. Henderson's 2021 detail doesn't appear in any official material. Her official bio describes a trained fighter with a jail record instead. Treat it as unconfirmed at best.

Still open

  • Lucia's heritage. Bloomberg reported she is Latina. The official bios in our sources don't say.
  • Whether there are other playable characters. PC Gamer raised the question in 2022, and Rockstar has only presented two.
  • Leak details such as the diner robbery and instant character switching. Rockstar hasn't confirmed either for the final game.

The rest of the answers arrive on November 19, when players get to see how the story of Jason and Lucia actually plays out.
