GTA 6 returning characters: every rumour versus the evidence

A GTA Online character seems to appear in GTA 6's extended look. Every returning character rumour, from Lance Vance to Lazlow, checked against the evidence.

Reported. Established outlets report this. Rockstar hasn't said so.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, and Rockstar Games still hasn't officially named a single character returning from earlier Grand Theft Auto games. The best evidence so far is Valentina, a minor GTA Online character. Fans and outlets including Kotaku and GamesRadar+ spotted her in the game's extended gameplay look in August. Everything else on the list, from Tommy Vercetti to Lazlow, is still speculation.

Fans have been chasing familiar faces since the first trailer in December 2023. Here is how each theory started, how much weight it carried, and where it stands now.

December 2023: a Lance Vance lookalike in Trailer 1

A few days after the first trailer came out, fans noticed a man at about the 33-second mark who resembles Lance Vance from the original Vice City. The giveaway was his white suit over a purple shirt. ComicBook.com reported the find on December 8, 2023, and was blunt about it: this is almost certainly an easter egg, not a comeback. Lance dies in Vice City, and close to 40 years separate that game from GTA 6.

Rockstar never commented. Status: unconfirmed. As a nod to the past, it's believable. As Lance actually returning, it goes against the series' own lore.

December 2023: the Tommy Vercetti question

With the series heading back to Vice City, people naturally asked about its most famous crime boss. On December 17, 2023, Game Rant floated a few ideas: an elderly Tommy as an antagonist, or a story about his empire after he's gone. The outlet also pointed out the obvious obstacle. Ray Liotta, who voiced Tommy, died in 2022.

That piece was an opinion column, not a report, and it offered no evidence. Status: unconfirmed. Nothing Rockstar has shown so far features Tommy or mentions him.

May 2025: Trailer 2 brings new faces, and a Phil Cassidy lookalike

Rockstar's second trailer arrived on May 6, 2025, together with a revamped website. Neither revealed any returning characters. As Game Informer summarised, the official cast was all new: Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos, Brian Heder and his wife Lori, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'quan Priest, the Real Dimez duo Bae-Luxe and Roxy, and Raul Bautista.

Fans did catch a brief glimpse of someone who looks a lot like Phil Cassidy, the arms dealer from GTA 3 and Vice City. Kotaku's explanation is the useful one here. Rockstar keeps its 2D, 3D and HD universes separate, so a 3D-era character can't truly come back in an HD-era game like GTA 6. If this is Phil, Kotaku says, he's a new version of the character appearing in the HD universe for the first time.

August 2025: Lazlow says he doubts it

Lazlow Jones voiced a radio personality in every GTA from GTA 3 to GTA 5 and became a full character with his own missions in GTA 5. He then turned down the hype himself. Asked by Nerd Reactor whether he'd be in GTA 6, he said: "We left in 2020, so I doubt it." Insider Gaming picked up the quote on August 6, 2025. Lazlow now works at Absurd Ventures, the studio Dan Houser founded in 2021.

Insider Gaming added a caveat: given how tightly Rockstar guards GTA 6, he couldn't have confirmed a role even if he had one. Status: unconfirmed, and the man himself thinks it's unlikely.

December 2025: Michael's GTA Online return sparks GTA 5 cameo talk

When Michael De Santa came back for new missions in the GTA Online update A Safehouse in the Hills, the "Kill Michael" ending of GTA 5 was effectively ruled out as canon. GamingBible reported that this got r/GTA6 talking about who from GTA 5 might show up in Leonida. Names thrown around included Lamar, Jimmy, Tracey and Gay Tony from GTA 4. Trevor is the long shot: GamingBible notes Steven Ogg has said he isn't keen to play him again.

Status: fan speculation, with no evidence for any specific cameo.

August 2026: Valentina makes the jump

The first strong evidence came on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar premiered a 30-minute extended look at GTA 6 on Netflix and then posted it on YouTube. Near the end, a coordinator hires Jason and Lucia as bodyguards for a wealthy young man. Lucia calls her "Val", and the man greets her as "Tina".

The GTA Wiki and other fans matched her to Valentina from GTA Online's 2025 Money Fronts update. That Valentina is also a fixer for rich clients: she introduces players to Mr. Faber and mentions she's only in town for 24 hours. Kotaku listed the evidence: the shared name, expensive clothes, a gold necklace, moles in the same places on her face, a similar voice and the same line of work. GamesRadar+ added that in GTA 6 the job is protecting guests at an event for Megamundo, a Spanish-language TV network. Since she's handing out what look like main missions, her role may well be bigger than her brief GTA Online scene.

Status: strongly supported, but not officially confirmed. The footage is Rockstar's own, but the identification comes from fans and press, and Rockstar hasn't said on the record that she's the same character. Both games sit in the HD universe, so unlike Lance or Phil, nothing in the lore gets in the way.

Scorecard: true, wrong and open

  • Valentina: very likely true, based on detailed visual evidence. Not confirmed by Rockstar.
  • Lance Vance: unconfirmed. Lore makes a real return very unlikely, and an easter egg is the best-case reading.
  • Phil Cassidy: unconfirmed. Per Kotaku, he could only be a new HD-era version, not a true returning character.
  • Tommy Vercetti: unconfirmed, and nothing supports it.
  • Lazlow: unconfirmed. He told Nerd Reactor he doubts it.
  • GTA 5 cast (Franklin, Michael, Lamar and others): unconfirmed fan speculation.

We found no claim that has been flatly disproven by Rockstar, because Rockstar hasn't talked about returning characters at all.

What comes next

Kotaku bets that Valentina won't be the only one. It points out that GTA 4 characters such as Packie and Brucie turned up in GTA 5 and GTA Online, so Kotaku expects GTA 4 and 5 faces to show up in GTA 6 as well, either as cameos or in bigger roles. That's an educated guess, not a report. With GTA Online still running and its future tied to the new game (see our GTA 6 Online explainer), crossovers like Valentina's are the most likely kind. Pre-loading starts on November 12, and the full answer arrives on November 19, after years of delays.
