GTA 6 release date: every delay and rumour up to November 19
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 after two delays. Here is every official window, slipped date and release rumour, and which ones turned out to be true.
Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

As of October 31, 2026, Grand Theft Auto 6 is 19 days from release. Rockstar Games has it launching on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and pre-loading opens on November 12. Getting to that date took one narrowed window, two official delays and a steady stream of investor calls, interviews and retailer leaks, so here is the whole timeline in order.
Before there was a date
GTA 6 was late long before any public window existed. Rockstar has said the project started life as Project Americas, a map meant to cover large parts of North and South America, and was later cut back to Miami and the area around it (our report on that history). The original plan had Rockstar North building GTA 6 while Rockstar San Diego made Red Dead Redemption 2. As RDR2 kept growing, GTA 6 slipped by several years. By 2019 the studio had the game's basic structure, including the Jason and Lucia double act, and Covid-19 then slowed the work that followed.
Rockstar's leaders have also said they chose not to repeat the crunch that went into RDR2. That decision doesn't explain any single delay, but it helps explain why the studio was willing to move dates rather than push staff harder.
Calendar 2025, then fall 2025
The first official target was calendar year 2025. Take-Two made it more specific on May 16, 2024, when its fiscal 2024 results described a "narrowing of Rockstar Games' previously established window of Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025." CEO Strauss Zelnick added that the company's expectations for the game's commercial impact "continue to increase."
Verdict: wrong. This was an official window, not a rumour, and the game missed it.
First delay: May 26, 2026
On May 2, 2025, Rockstar posted on its Newswire that GTA 6 was now coming May 26, 2026. The studio apologised for the later date and said it needed the extra time to deliver the quality players expect.
Verdict: wrong. The date lasted about six months.
Second delay: November 19, 2026
On November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced that the game would launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026. It apologised again for lengthening "a long wait" and said the extra months would go into polish.
On the earnings call the next day, Zelnick defended the move. According to GamesRadar+, he said moving a date is always painful but that "we've never regretted it in retrospect," and that competitors who refused needed delays "did so at their peril."
The private side of that decision has since come out. Rockstar's Jennifer Kolbe recalled phoning Zelnick to tell him the game would miss May 2026. She says his first reaction was "You're kidding. Please tell me you're kidding," and that he then accepted the delay. Zelnick's wider comments on delays and pricing are collected in our Zelnick explainer.
How far did it really slip?
In May 2026, Zelnick told podcast host David Senra, "I think we're about 18 months behind the original date." TechRadar took this to mean the game was first aimed at early 2025. Counting back 18 months from November 2026 lands around spring 2025. Zelnick did not name the original date, and "about" leaves room either way.
Verdict: unconfirmed. It does suggest an internal target earlier than the public fall 2025 window, but nobody has given the exact date.
Holding the line through 2026
The November date has not moved since. On Take-Two's May 2026 earnings call, Zelnick said, according to Vice, "I think we've been really clear that we're releasing the title on November 19." Vice also reported that he told Bloomberg marketing would start in "summertime," which he defined as the end of June or early July, with pre-orders opening at the same time.
That clashed with a retailer leak. TechRadar reported that a Best Buy affiliate email seemed to point to a pre-order window of May 18 to May 21. Neither Rockstar nor Best Buy confirmed it, and we can't verify the exact dates, so it stays a rumour.
On August 7, 2026, Take-Two's fiscal first quarter results cited the "November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI" and kept the company's fiscal 2027 Net Bookings forecast at $8.0 to $8.2 billion. Rockstar then announced the radio stations on October 8 and released the launch trailer on October 15. With pre-loading scheduled for November 12, the date now looks as firm as a release date gets.
The scorecard
- Calendar 2025 (official): missed.
- Fall 2025 (official, May 2024): missed.
- May 26, 2026 (official, May 2025): missed.
- November 19, 2026 (official, November 2025): still holding, with pre-load on November 12.
- Original target in early 2025 (TechRadar reading of Zelnick): unconfirmed.
- Best Buy pre-order window of May 18 to 21 (retailer leak): unconfirmed.
- Marketing starting in early summer 2026 (Zelnick via Vice): the exact start date is unconfirmed in our reporting. What we can confirm is that the major October beats, including the launch trailer, happened.
What's still open
For console players, nothing is left to guess about the date. PC is a different story. Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced a PC version. GamesBeat has reported one planned for early 2027, but that is a report, not an announcement. Rockstar's history points to a gap: GTA 5 reached PC about 18 months after consoles, and RDR2 took a year. Zelnick has said Take-Two usually doesn't launch on every platform at once, though he has also said PC is becoming more important to the company. Until Rockstar says otherwise, November 19 is a console-only date.
