GTA 6 animals: every species and feature confirmed so far

Every animal confirmed for GTA 6 so far, from alligators to manatees, plus the study system and Rare, Discoverable and Legendary creatures across Leonida.

Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

GTA 6 is set to have the most varied wildlife Rockstar has put in a Grand Theft Auto game. A GamesRadar+ roundup published on October 30 puts the total at more than 170 species, with over 60 kinds of bird and more than 30 land mammals, plus reptiles, fish and more. The outlet doesn't say exactly where that figure comes from, so treat it as reported rather than final. The individual animals below are a different matter: they have appeared in Rockstar's own trailers, screenshots and previews.

Here is everything we know about the creatures of Leonida, what you can do with them, and what Rockstar is still keeping quiet.

Every GTA 6 animal seen so far

GamesRadar+ has catalogued 29 animals shown in official material. We've sorted them into groups so they're easier to scan:

GroupAnimals
Land mammalsBear, cat (domestic and feral), cougar, cow, deer, dog (several breeds), nine-banded armadillo, raccoon, rat, rhesus macaque monkey
Marine lifeDolphin, jellyfish, manatee, manta ray, sea turtle, shark (several species), whale
BirdsBald eagle, duck, flamingo, pelican, pigeon, seagull, whooping crane
Reptiles and amphibiansAlligator, cane toad, frog, green iguana, snake

If the 170 figure holds up, this list covers only a small slice of what's in the game. Most of the birds alone haven't been shown yet.

Native and invasive species

According to GamesRadar+, Leonida's wildlife mixes animals that belong in each habitat with invasive species, just like real-world Florida. That fits the list. Cane toads, green iguanas and rhesus macaques are all well-known invaders in the real state, and having them sit alongside manatees, alligators and whooping cranes suggests Rockstar has done its homework on the ecology as well as the scenery. If you want to know where these animals might turn up, our Leonida map regions guide covers the wetlands, coasts and cities officially shown so far.

How GTA 6 animals look and move

The report says each species has movement animations built on extensive research. Rendering gets a big upgrade too, with support for iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency and several different feather types. That should make anything from jellyfish to flamingos look far better than GTA 5's wildlife.

Fur also gets a rework. GamesRadar+ describes new hair and fur systems that allow colour variation between animals, change how a coat looks when it's wet, and let dirt from the environment mat into the fur. A dog that's just been through a swamp should look like it.

Interacting with animals: Praise, Pet, Scold and Study

GTA 6 animals aren't just background. In Rockstar's Extended Look footage, Jason walks up to a dog at an apartment complex and gets a menu of options. From a distance he can Praise it. Up close he can either Pet or Scold it, and the dog reacts to whichever he picks.

The most interesting option is Study. Studying an animal logs it in a compendium, much like the one in Red Dead Redemption 2. GamesRadar+ thinks completing the logbook will probably earn rewards, but that's the outlet's guess. Rockstar hasn't said what, if anything, you get for filling it in.

Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals

This is where the Red Dead comparison goes further. According to GamesRadar+, Rockstar has confirmed that Leonida will have unusual creatures you can track down, split into three categories:

  • Rare animals
  • Discoverable animals
  • Legendary animals

That's as far as Rockstar has gone. The studio is deliberately holding back details so players can stumble on these creatures themselves. Anyone who chased legendary animals in Red Dead Redemption 2 will have a good idea of the format, but we don't yet know how many there are, where they live or what happens when you find one.

The Leonida zoo

You won't have to head into the swamps to see everything. GamesRadar+ says Leonida has its own zoo, and visiting it counts as one of the game's side activities. The outlet adds a sensible tip: shake off any Wanted Level first if you want a calm day out.

What's still unconfirmed

  • The full species list. The 170-plus figure comes from GamesRadar+'s reporting. Only 29 animals have been shown on screen.
  • Compendium rewards. Probably, according to GamesRadar+, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed anything.
  • Hunting and fishing. Nothing in the source material says whether you can hunt, fish or sell animal parts the way you could in Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • Legendary animal details. Rockstar has confirmed the categories, not the creatures.

The wildlife is shaping up as one of the systems that sets GTA 6 apart from its predecessor. It also gives you a reason to wander Leonida's backroads and coastline with no mission marker in sight. We'll update this guide as Rockstar shows more.
