GTA 6 moon theory: every trailer prediction versus reality
How GTA 6 fans used moon phases and the number 27 to predict Trailer 2, why every guess missed, and how Rockstar actually released it on May 6, 2025.
Rumour. An unverified leak or claim. Treat it with caution until Rockstar speaks.

The GTA 6 "moon phase" theory never predicted a trailer correctly. Every date it named for Trailer 2 came and went with nothing, and Rockstar Games eventually released the trailer with no warning on May 6, 2025, four days after it delayed the game. GTA 6 is now out on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the launch trailer arrived on October 15, 2026. So the countdown hunting is over, but the theory is still a fun piece of fan history.
Where it started: the Trailer 1 coincidence
The idea has its roots in 2023. According to Game Rant, Rockstar posted a GTA Online promo image in September 2023 with a large waning gibbous moon in the background. Kotaku reports that the real moon reached that phase on December 1, 2023, which was the day Rockstar announced that GTA 6's first trailer would arrive on December 5.
The sources don't quite agree on what happened that day. Kotaku and Game Rant say December 1 was when the trailer's date was announced. PC Gamer later called it the day the trailer itself dropped. In both versions, though, fans only spotted the link after the fact. That gave them one data point and no word from Rockstar.
November 2024: the November 22 prediction
The theory came back on November 1, 2024, when Rockstar tweeted details of a December GTA Online update built around the Darnell Bros. Garment Factory. The screenshot showed a character on a car at night with the moon overhead. Kotaku reports that a Reddit user identified it as another waning gibbous moon. On November 5, 80 Level covered a version of the theory pushed by the fan account GTA 6 Countdown.
Fans settled on November 22, 2024, which Game Rant says was when that lunar phase ended. They didn't agree on what would happen that day: Kotaku saw guesses ranging from Trailer 2 to a release date announcement to a teaser for a future trailer. Kotaku also saw one popular account tie the theory to Tom Petty. The first trailer used Petty's "Love Is a Long Road", and he once released an album called Full Moon Fever.
Verdict: wrong. Game Rant reported that November 22 passed "well past 9 AM ET", when Rockstar and Take-Two usually announce things, without a word about the trailer.
December 2024: the 27 theory and the moon's second try
Next came numerology. PC Gamer described a theory that began on a GTA 6 leaks account. The account pored over a Rockstar developer's photo of a Rockstar jumper, where cat hair seemed to form a "VI" and a note nearby showed a number for a shop called 27 Auto Sales. From there, fans found 27s everywhere: Rockstar's Instagram post count, a pink car seen 27 seconds into Trailer 1, a police license plate whose digits added up to 27, and Bonnie and Clyde's identification order number, 1227. All of it pointed to December 27.
The moon theory came back too, now aimed at December 20, 2024 and then January 19, 2025. Its fans added older examples: according to the posts PC Gamer cited, Red Dead Redemption 2's first trailer (October 20, 2016) and Red Dead Redemption's "My Name is John Marston" trailer (November 30, 2009) both landed on waning gibbous moons. PC Gamer's writer didn't buy it. They suggested Rockstar simply likes to make noise at the end of the year, and called the whole thing a likely case of confirmation bias.
Verdict: wrong on all three dates. Trailer 2 didn't show up on December 20, December 27 or January 19.
How Trailer 2 actually arrived
The real trigger was a business decision. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar delayed GTA 6 to May 26, 2026. Four days later, on May 6, it put up a Newswire post with Trailer 2, the tagline "Explore Vice City and beyond" and wishlist links for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GamesRadar+ said it dropped "out of nowhere". The trailer shows Lucia leaving prison to join Jason in a life of crime, and Rockstar's new character profiles introduced Jason's friend Cal Hampton. The music is The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together".
On May 9, PC Gamer reported Rockstar's claim that Trailer 2 was the biggest video launch of all time, with more than 475 million views across platforms. Trailer 1, which was only on YouTube, had 93 million views over the same stretch. Spotify said streams of "Hot Together" rose by 182,000%.
No moon, no 27, no teaser. PC Gamer described the trailer as Rockstar softening the blow of the delay.
The scorecard
| Prediction | Date named | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Moon phase linked to Trailer 1 news | December 1, 2023 | Matched, but only noticed after the fact |
| Moon theory, round one | November 22, 2024 | Wrong |
| Moon theory revival | December 20, 2024 | Wrong |
| The 27 theory | December 27, 2024 | Wrong |

The one pattern the record backs up is plain: Trailer 2 followed a delay announcement, not a sky chart.
