GTA 6 radio: six stations, podcasts, on-foot listening

Rockstar details six GTA 6 radio stations, including Flash FM, and confirms on-demand podcasts plus headphones for listening on foot for the first time.

Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

Rockstar Games has given fans their first proper look at what will play on Leonida's airwaves. In a Newswire post on October 8, the studio detailed six of GTA 6's radio stations and confirmed two series firsts: on-demand podcasts, and radio and podcasts you can keep playing on foot. Jason and Lucia do this with new in-game headphones and earbuds connected to their smartphones.

Rockstar calls the soundtrack "the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet," with stations covering everything from Classic Rock to Talk Radio. Gematsu reports that the official GTA 6 website now has previews of all six stations, so you can listen before launch. Dexerto adds that Rockstar put out three new screenshots alongside the announcement.

The six stations revealed so far

Here is the lineup, based on Rockstar's announcement as covered by Dexerto and Eurogamer:

  • Flash FM: A name Vice City fans will know, now a pop station. Rockstar says it is "guaranteed to make you dance no matter where you find yourself in the Goodtime State."
  • Cocoteo FM: Modern Latin music, including bachata, merengue, dembow and reggaeton, hosted by El Martillo and La Gata.
  • Back Country Radio: Country music from MW and Delta Dawne, broadcasting to the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and beyond. It also has Mud Dog Mike, a roving reporter and swamp meteorologist who calls in from his airboat.
  • AfroBank FM: African music, from 20th-century classics to newer styles like amapiano and 3-step.
  • The Chamber 106.6: Metal from the 1980s onward, with DJ Kerry and DJ Tom.
  • Dirty South Classics: Regional rap and hip-hop classics, presented by Trick and Trina.

The famous voices behind the mics

The in-game names hide some very big real-world artists, according to reports. Eurogamer, citing Rolling Stone, and a CharlieIntel post embedded by Dexerto give the hosts as:

StationReported real-world hostsIn-game names
Cocoteo FMBad Bunny, RaiNaoEl Martillo, La Gata
AfroBank FMBurna Boy, Palms TraxBurna, Palmsy

Dirty South ClassicsTrick Daddy, TrinaTrick, Trina
Back Country RadioLana Del Rey, Morgan Wallen, Jeremy DufreneMW, Delta Dawne

The Back Country Radio names come from Eurogamer alone, since the CharlieIntel post cuts off before that station. Eurogamer does not say which in-game role each of those three plays. The Rockstar excerpt we reviewed does not name the real-world hosts, so treat this list as reported, not officially confirmed.

Why headphones change things

In past Grand Theft Auto games, radio mostly lived in your car. Get out and the music stopped. GTA 6 drops that limit. With earbuds or headphones connected to the in-game phone, you can take a station or a podcast with you through a shootout, a shopping trip or a walk along the beach.

The podcasts are new as well. Rockstar says they sit "beyond Leonida's terrestrial radio," which means you choose what to hear instead of waiting for a DJ to get to it. Rockstar's radio has always been one of the sharpest places for its satire, and a podcast library gives its writers a lot more space for it. Eurogamer's joke sums it up: you can binge true crime while committing some.

The announcement also landed on a busy day. Eurogamer notes it came at the same time as another gameplay footage leak from CyberLeek, the leaker who had seemed to go quiet after Take-Two took legal action to identify them. Rockstar has not commented on that leak in the material we reviewed.

What we still don't know

Rockstar presented these six as "a look at" its stations, not the full list. The Classic Rock and Talk Radio stations it mentioned were not among them, so more reveals are likely. Rockstar has not named any podcasts or their hosts yet, and no full tracklists have been published. If you want something from further out on the rumour side, a leaker has claimed that Daft Punk turned down a GTA 6 offer, though there is no evidence for it so far.

The wait is short now. GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the rest of the dial will be heard by then at the latest. For the music written for the game itself, Justice's GTA 6 Original Score arrives on December 11.
