GTA 6 launch trailer shows no sign of RAGE's old animation stutter

Digital Foundry found the animation stutter seen in Rockstar games since GTA 4 in every GTA 6 trailer except the launch trailer. Is it finally fixed?

Reported. Established outlets report this. Rockstar hasn't said so.

A small visual flaw has been part of Rockstar's games for close to two decades, and GTA 6 may finally be dropping it. GamesRadar+ reported on October 16 that Digital Foundry found an animation stutter in every GTA 6 trailer released so far, except the most recent one. The launch trailer shows no visible sign of it.

What the stutter is

The problem is uneven animation pacing. In most Rockstar titles since GTA 4, including GTA 5 and both Red Dead Redemption games, character animations and camera movement sometimes advance at an irregular rhythm. The result is a slightly jerky look that GamesRadar+ likens to stop motion. It is easy to mistake for dropped frames, but according to the outlet the cause appears to be the RAGE engine itself, the technology that has run Rockstar's games since GTA 4.

Many players have never noticed it. Once you see it, though, it is hard to stop seeing, and it shows up most clearly during slow camera pans.

Why the launch trailer stands out

Digital Foundry's analysis found the stutter in all the earlier GTA 6 footage, including the extended gameplay showcase. The launch trailer is the exception, and the timing makes that interesting. The trailer is full of panning shots, exactly where the issue would normally be most obvious, yet it appears to be clean throughout.

The simplest explanation is that the trailer uses carefully picked scenes that happen to avoid the problem. GamesRadar+ doesn't think that holds up, because Rockstar made no effort to hide the stutter in earlier previews. If the studio didn't edit around it before, there is little reason to think it started now.

It also fits what Rockstar has said publicly about the game's development. Studio staff have been open that GTA 6 is still being adjusted in the final weeks before release, so an engine-level fix arriving late in the process is plausible.

What it means for players

If the fix is real, GTA 6 should feel smoother in motion than its predecessors, especially when driving or whipping the camera around Vice City. That would be a separate improvement from raw frame rate, which is still an open question of its own. Rockstar has yet to show footage from PS5 Pro or commit to a 60fps mode.

What is still unconfirmed

Rockstar has not said that it fixed the stutter, and the GamesRadar+ report includes no comment from the studio. What we have is careful observation of a single trailer, which is promotional footage and not something you can play. Trailers can be captured and edited in ways that don't reflect a normal play session.

The answer should come soon. Rockstar has dated GTA 6 for November 19, and the first hands-on footage and technical breakdowns after launch should show quickly whether RAGE's stutter is gone or just didn't make the trailer's final cut.
